Mystery box ideas: sell a limited edition run on Shopify

IDEA: A limited edition run goes inside a mystery box with a much larger run. Every buyer gets an item, and a small, fixed number of them get the limited edition.

The limited edition is what sells the box. This guide uses a niche fragrance store as the example throughout: 20 limited edition 50ml bottles worth $250 each, placed inside a run of 1,000 boxes at $39. From the highest value down, out of 1,000 boxes:

  • Limited edition 50ml bottle (worth $250, not sold anywhere else): 20 buyers
  • 10ml bottle from the core line: 980 buyers, the most common item

Instead of selling the 20 bottles as 20 orders, the store sells 1,000 boxes. The price, items and drop rates are yours to set.

The box costs far less than the limited edition inside it. That gap is what makes the chase worth joining: $39 for a shot at a $250 bottle that isn't sold anywhere else. The 980 core bottles make sure every box is still a fair buy for buyers who don't hit.

Why merchants run this
Turn a 20-piece limited run into a release 1,000 buyers can take part in
Put your core line in the hands of new buyers who came for the chase
Make each limited release an event your audience waits for

Why it works

A 20-piece release usually sells out to whoever gets there first, and everyone else leaves with nothing.

  • The chase is easy to join. $39 for a shot at a $250 bottle nobody can buy outright is a small, clear decision.
  • Missing out still means getting something. 980 buyers out of 1,000 receive a 10ml bottle from the core line, so the box stands on its own as a purchase.
  • The run goes further. In this example, 1,000 boxes at $39 bring in $39,000 in sales, against $5,000 if the 20 bottles sold at $250 each. The 980 core bottles carry their own cost, so work out your margin with your own numbers.
  • The 20 who hit have something to show. A bottle that was never on sale is the reveal people post about, and every post is a reason for the next buyer to try.
Selling the 20 pieces directly
Shareability: Low, sold out before most people see it
Perceived value: High, but only for the 20 who got one
Repeat visit: Nothing for the buyers who missed out
Standout factor: A sold-out page
Limited Edition Mystery Box
Shareability: High, the 20 reveals are worth posting
Perceived value: A real shot at a $250 bottle for $39
Repeat visit: 980 buyers now own a bottle from your core line
Standout factor: A release everyone can join

When and who should use this

Best suited for a planned release moment: a limited batch, a collaboration, an anniversary edition or a seasonal one-off. Announce the date and the number of boxes ahead of time so the chase builds before the box goes live.

Fits stores that have both a limited piece worth chasing and a core line that can fill the rest of the boxes at a cost that works for you: fragrance, candles, skincare, coffee, art prints, streetwear, collectible toys. Set the box run to a number your audience can actually buy. Only Mysbox is needed.

Skip it if you don't have a core item that can fill most of the boxes at a cost that works, or if the limited piece isn't something your buyers would chase.

Instructions

1
Create your main product. In Shopify Admin → Products, create the box customers will buy (e.g. "Limited Edition Mystery Box", $39) and set its inventory to the size of your run (1,000 in this example).Creating the Limited Edition Mystery Box product at $39 with 1,000 units of inventory in Shopify Admin
2
Set up one product per item. Create a product for the limited edition 50ml bottle with an inventory of 20, and set it to Draft so it can only be won from the box, never bought on its own. Limited edition 50ml bottle product set to Draft with 20 units of inventory in ShopifyFor the 10ml core bottle, use your existing product or create one, with enough inventory for the other 980 boxes.10ml core line bottle product with inventory for the other 980 boxes in Shopify
3
Open the Mysbox app → Create new box → Single Box.Creating a new mystery box in the Mysbox appSelecting the Single Box option in Mysbox
4
In Box settings, select Box type - Instantly opening, then under Link to mystery product select the box from step 1. Then select Randomization method by single items.Setting Box type to Instantly opening, linking the Limited Edition Mystery Box product and choosing randomization by single items in Mysbox
5
In Prize, add the limited edition bottle and the 10ml core bottle, and set their quantities. Mysbox automatically turns them into drop rates.Adding the limited edition bottle and the 10ml core bottle as prizes with their quantities in Mysbox
6
Under Chance display, select Show remaining stock instead of Show original chance. Then, pick your unboxing animation. A reveal with some build-up suits a chase, since buyers are waiting to see if they hit. You can always change the animation or item list later in Style settings.
Then hit Save to create your campaign.Selecting Show remaining stock under Chance display and choosing the unboxing animation in Mysbox
New: Show remaining stock displays the real-time stock left for both the box and each item. Buyers can see exactly how many limited edition bottles are still in play, which is a clearer pull than a 2% figure, and every bottle that goes makes the next box feel more urgent.

Check it works on your storefront

Before you announce the release, open the box's product page on your storefront and check the price, the description and the remaining stock shown for the box and each item.Limited Edition Mystery Box product page live on the storefront, ready for customers to buy and unbox

Once real buyers start opening boxes, two features work for you:

Recent pulls. Your storefront shows the items other buyers recently pulled from the box, so new buyers can see the limited edition is really in there. It fills in from real orders, so it stays empty while you test.Recent pulls on the Limited Edition Mystery Box product page, showing the items other buyers recently got from the box

Open more (new). After the reveal, an Open more button adds the same box to the cart and takes the buyer straight to the cart page, where they can change the quantity.Open more button shown after the mystery box reveal, which adds the box to the cart

Before you publish
