INDUSTRY: General retails
GOALS: FOMO, Volume-scale, Acquisition
IDEA: A limited edition run goes inside a mystery box with a much larger run. Every buyer gets an item, and a small, fixed number of them get the limited edition.
The limited edition is what sells the box. This guide uses a niche fragrance store as the example throughout: 20 limited edition 50ml bottles worth $250 each, placed inside a run of 1,000 boxes at $39. From the highest value down, out of 1,000 boxes:
- Limited edition 50ml bottle (worth $250, not sold anywhere else): 20 buyers
- 10ml bottle from the core line: 980 buyers, the most common item
Instead of selling the 20 bottles as 20 orders, the store sells 1,000 boxes. The price, items and drop rates are yours to set.
The box costs far less than the limited edition inside it. That gap is what makes the chase worth joining: $39 for a shot at a $250 bottle that isn't sold anywhere else. The 980 core bottles make sure every box is still a fair buy for buyers who don't hit.
Why it works
A 20-piece release usually sells out to whoever gets there first, and everyone else leaves with nothing.
- The chase is easy to join. $39 for a shot at a $250 bottle nobody can buy outright is a small, clear decision.
- Missing out still means getting something. 980 buyers out of 1,000 receive a 10ml bottle from the core line, so the box stands on its own as a purchase.
- The run goes further. In this example, 1,000 boxes at $39 bring in $39,000 in sales, against $5,000 if the 20 bottles sold at $250 each. The 980 core bottles carry their own cost, so work out your margin with your own numbers.
- The 20 who hit have something to show. A bottle that was never on sale is the reveal people post about, and every post is a reason for the next buyer to try.
When and who should use this
Best suited for a planned release moment: a limited batch, a collaboration, an anniversary edition or a seasonal one-off. Announce the date and the number of boxes ahead of time so the chase builds before the box goes live.
Fits stores that have both a limited piece worth chasing and a core line that can fill the rest of the boxes at a cost that works for you: fragrance, candles, skincare, coffee, art prints, streetwear, collectible toys. Set the box run to a number your audience can actually buy. Only Mysbox is needed.
Skip it if you don't have a core item that can fill most of the boxes at a cost that works, or if the limited piece isn't something your buyers would chase.
Instructions
For the 10ml core bottle, use your existing product or create one, with enough inventory for the other 980 boxes.

Then hit Save to create your campaign.
Check it works on your storefront
Before you announce the release, open the box's product page on your storefront and check the price, the description and the remaining stock shown for the box and each item.
Once real buyers start opening boxes, two features work for you:
Recent pulls. Your storefront shows the items other buyers recently pulled from the box, so new buyers can see the limited edition is really in there. It fills in from real orders, so it stays empty while you test.
Open more (new). After the reveal, an Open more button adds the same box to the cart and takes the buyer straight to the cart page, where they can change the quantity.
