Mystery Reward Boxes: turn BFCM & seasonal sales into a game

Industry: GENERAL RETAILS

Goals: SEASONAL-GAMIFY, FOMO, RETENTION

This use case turns a seasonal discount into something buyers open. You sell a cheap mystery box, and the prize inside is store credit. Everyone gets credit back, but nobody knows how much until they open it.

The walkthrough below uses a $5 box with five store credit tiers: 1% pay $1, 60% pay $6, 25% pay $8, 12% pay $12, and 2% hit a $25 jackpot. The price, the tiers and the odds are all yours to set.

The idea is that most prizes pay back more than the box costs, and one rare tier pays back less: 1% for $1. A game nobody can lose has nothing to talk about afterwards, and at those odds the box still never reads as a bad deal.

Why merchants run this
Turn a seasonal discount into a gamified reward buyers want to share
Keep every payout profitable while still feeling generous to the buyer
Give buyers a reason to come back and redeem their credit

Why it works

By BFCM, every store in a buyer's inbox is running a percentage off, so a code reads as the baseline rather than a win.

  • A discount is claimed. A box is opened. The buyer stops comparing offers and starts playing.
  • The odds sit firmly in their favour, so buying one is an easy decision. What they can't predict is how far ahead they'll end up.
  • The credit comes back to you. A percentage off leaves your store as margin. Credit has to be spent in it.
Flat discount code
Shareability: Low, one-time use
Perceived value: Fixed, forgettable
Repeat visit: None built in
Standout factor: Same as every competitor
Mystery Reward Box
Shareability: High, reveal moment is screenshot-worthy
Perceived value: Feels like a win, variable and exciting
Repeat visit: Store credit pulls customer back
Standout factor: Distinct, game-like

When and who should use this

Best suited for stores running a time-boxed seasonal campaign (Halloween, BFCM, anniversary sales) rather than an always-on offer. The novelty and urgency are part of what makes it work.

Fits stores with an existing returning-customer base who will actually come back to spend the credit, and categories where an impulse, game-like purchase feels natural (apparel, beauty, collectibles, F&B, general gifting). Requires both Mysbox and Koin installed and connected.

Instructions

1
Install Koin app (if not already set up) and activate it. This is where customer store credit / wallet balances live.
Koin app is completely free to use, no cost concern here.
2
Create your main product. In Shopify AdminProducts, create the box customers will actually purchase (e.g. "Mystery Reward Box", $5). Creating the Mystery Reward Box product in Shopify Admin Turn off the "Physical product" toggle in Shipping section, since there's nothing to ship. This lets the order fulfill automatically instead of sitting on manual fulfillment, which is required for the reveal + credit flow to trigger right away. 3
Create one product per reward tier. Create a separate product for each store credit amount you'll give out (e.g. $1, $6, $8, $12, $25). Set every one of these to Draft so they never appear on your storefront. Reward tier store credit products set to Draft status in Shopify Set each tier's Product type to "topup" and its Price to match the credit value (the $6 tier must be priced at $6). This is required for Koin to issue the correct credit amount. Setting Product type to topup and price for each store credit reward tier
4
Open the Mysbox app → Create new box → Single Box. Creating a new mystery box in the Mysbox app Selecting Single Box option in Mysbox
5
In Box settings, select Box type - Instantly opening, under Link to mystery product select the box from step 2. Configuring Mysbox box settings and linking the Mystery Reward Box product
6
Choose your randomization type and add your prize tiers. Select Random by single item(s), since each tier is its own product, then add each of the 5 tier products to the Prize section and set their odds to match your reward table. Setting randomization type and adding store credit prize tiers in Mysbox
Odds are locked in from what's actually configured, nothing to fake, nothing to adjust after the fact.
7
Pick your unboxing animation. Carousel or Gashapon machine both suit the "lucky draw" feel well. You can always change the animation or prize list later in Style settings.
Then hit Save to create your campaign.Choosing the unboxing animation for the Mystery Reward Box campaignHere's the reward box live on your storefront:

8
Connect Mysbox and Koin automatically via Shopify Flow. Koin ships with 2 pre-built flows for fulfillment and store credit top-up. Open Shopify Flow, import both flows, and activate them. Importing Koin's Shopify Flow automations for store credit fulfillment

One-time setup. Once active, every fulfilled order issues credit automatically, no manual crediting.
