Shopify Editions Fall '26: what's live, what's coming, and what to do before BFCM
Shopify Editions Fall 2026 went out on October 28, four weeks before Black Friday. It covers eleven areas, from AI agents and Sidekick to payments, POS and the developer platform. Most of it is already in your admin. Some of it is marked "coming soon" with no date, and a good share only applies to POS, Shopify Plus or a single country.
This summary keeps what matters to an online Shopify store this season: what changed, whether you can use it today, and what to do about it.
Key takeaways
- Campaign Autopilot now runs on Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads next, and a pre-built Black Friday email series is ready to schedule.
- Rollouts now bundle theme, checkout, catalog and discount changes into one scheduled launch, with automatic rollback for catalog changes.
- Shop Pay checkout reaches more AI agents, and a new admin page lets you approve the policies and facts those agents share about your store.
- Shopify Payments blocks high-risk orders before payment is authorised and writes chargeback responses for you.
- Analytics counts sessions differently from this release, so comparisons across October 28 aren't like-for-like.
- Checkout custom fields, the admin refresh and the Shopify Protect app are not live yet.
1. Shopify Editions Fall '26 at a glance
The table sums up each area of Shopify Editions Fall '26 in one row, with Shopify's own status wording in the third column. Read it once and you know what you can use today, what is still on its way, and which areas you can skip entirely.
| Area | What's new | Status | Should you care |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI agents | Shop skill for any agent; Shop Pay checkout in Meta Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct; selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini; approve the business details agents share | Live | Yes: check your business details |
| Sidekick | Stages several changes at once, writes code, researches, shows recommendations tested in SimGym | Live | Yes |
| Online store | Canvas editor for the whole store; better predictive search; right-to-left languages | Live | Yes |
| Rollouts | Theme, checkout, catalogs and discounts in one scheduled launch; rollback for catalog changes | Live | Yes, before BFCM |
| Marketing | Campaign Autopilot on Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, X Ads next; pre-built Black Friday email series | Live | Yes, this week |
| Payments | High-risk orders blocked before authorisation; AI chargeback responses; delivery proof attached to disputes | Live | Yes |
| Analytics | Bot-filtered, consent-aware sessions; manual annotations; app events in reports | Live | Yes, your numbers change |
| Checkout | Custom fields in the checkout editor; tiled payment methods; stacked form layout | Rolling out soon | Not yet |
| Admin | Full visual refresh; filterable activity log | Rolling out soon / coming soon | Not yet |
| Shop app | Multi-brand checkout, cart sync across devices, Instagram auto-sync | Live | If Shop drives your sales |
| Retail | 20 POS updates | Live | Only if you sell in person |
| B2B | Three small items | Live | Barely |
| Developers | Shop MCP, WebMCP, Catalog API, new partner earnings | Live | If you build apps |
How to read the status. Shopify only badges the exceptions on the Editions page. An item with no badge is live. "Coming soon", "rolling out soon", "early access" and "in beta" mark the ones that aren't. Check your plan and market too: multi-currency payouts need Advanced or Plus, HSA and FSA payments are US-only, and Cartes Bancaires is France-only.
Shopify's page doesn't say what is live. This sorts the Edition by status.
2. AI agents: more places to sell, and a say in what agents tell shoppers
Selling through AI agents started in earlier Editions. Fall '26 widens where Shop Pay checkout works. More useful for most stores, it adds a page in the admin where you approve the facts agents share about your business.
- Shop skill. A `shop.md` file lets ChatGPT, Claude or other agents find products, recommend them and check out with Shop Pay.
- Shop Pay checkout in more agents: Meta Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct.
- Google Search AI Mode and the Gemini app now sell products with Shopify-powered checkout.
- Compare-at prices reach Shopify Catalog, so agents can show shoppers that a product is marked down.
- Business details in AI channels. Review and approve the policies, FAQs and other facts agents share, and get suggestions to improve them.
The last one is the item to act on. Agents already quote your return and shipping policies to shoppers. Open the page, read what they will say, and fix anything out of date before BFCM traffic arrives.

3. Sidekick can now stage several changes at once
Sidekick in Fall '26 can plan a set of changes, let you approve them once, and apply them together. It also writes code, researches across the apps installed on your store, and shows recommendations it has already tested in SimGym, Shopify's simulation tool.
You can ask it to build a holiday collection, feature it on your homepage and create a discount code in one request. It also handles draft orders, product-level pricing questions, payout and chargeback questions, and checkout customisation.
Canvas is the other new piece. It shows your whole store in one view, lets you zoom into any page, and works with Sidekick to redesign it. Canvas runs inside ChatGPT and Claude as well. If your theme is heavily customised, you can give Sidekick markdown files that explain how it's built.
Nothing to set up here. Try Sidekick on a low-risk task first, before you trust it with BFCM changes.
4. Rollouts: schedule your BFCM launch as one change
Rollouts got a clearer setup in Fall '26 and now cover more of a launch. One rollout holds your theme, checkout configuration, catalogs and discounts, scheduled to go live together. It also extends to headless storefronts, Shopify POS, Google Shopping and the Shop app.
- Discount rollouts schedule a promotion together with the theme and checkout changes that announce it.
- Catalog rollouts schedule price and publishing changes by market, with automatic rollback.
- Multi-channel rollouts cover headless, POS, Google Shopping and the Shop app.
Most BFCM launches are a theme change, a discount, a price list and a checkout banner, each switched on by hand at midnight. Build yours as one rollout this week and test it on a dummy event first.

5. Campaign Autopilot adds Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat
Campaign Autopilot, Shopify's AI campaign manager, now runs ads on Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads coming next. It also manages SEO from the same place. For a small team, that means more ad channels this BFCM without more people to run them.
Other marketing updates that are live:
- A pre-built Black Friday email campaign you can preview, edit and schedule.
- Unified marketing reports that separate traffic sources, so you can see which channel drove a sale.
- Shop Campaigns in more than 35 new markets, with spend, sales and ROAS available in ShopifyQL.
- WhatsApp marketing consent at checkout, plus automated WhatsApp messages to recover lost sales.
- A ChatGPT Ads app for sponsored placements inside chats.
If you test Autopilot this season, write down your current channel numbers first so you can tell whether it helped. And if you haven't written your own BFCM emails, schedule the pre-built series now.

6. Payments: fraud and chargeback tools to set up before BFCM
Shopify Payments now blocks high-risk orders automatically before payment is authorised. It also shows which factors raised an order's risk level, and lets you write custom fraud rules and backtest them against past orders before you switch them on.
Chargebacks take less work too:
- AI-generated chargeback responses, written for the customer's bank and the type of dispute.
- Evidence filled in for you: card, receipt and authentication data on unauthorised chargebacks, and the carrier's proof of delivery attached to disputes. FedEx delivery photos now appear on the order.
Other payment updates that are live:
- Higher approval rates in the US, from machine learning on first-try online payments.
- More local payment methods: Alipay, WeChat Pay, Satispay, Scalapay, GrabPay, MB WAY and OXXO.
- Shop Pay next to your current provider, without replacing the gateway you already run.
- A redesigned payouts view showing pending and paid amounts by date.
The Shopify Protect app, which brings fraud blocking, disputes and rules into one place, is still "rolling out soon". So is chargeback protection for orders not paid with Shop Pay. The features listed above are live.

7. Analytics: sessions are counted differently from October 28
Shopify changed how analytics counts a session in this release. Sessions now use smart bot filtering, unified journeys across your site and consent-aware visit counting. The number is closer to real human visits, but it no longer compares cleanly with your numbers from before.
If your sessions drop this week, check this before you go looking for a traffic problem. Then use the new manual annotations to mark October 28 on your reports, so anyone reading them later knows why the line moved.
The same release adds app events to custom reports, filters by category metafields (colour, material, pattern) and metaobjects, geospatial maps, and purchase order data.

8. Shipping, returns and store operations
Fall '26 adds a long list of smaller fixes to shipping, returns and day-to-day admin work. None of them needs a BFCM project, but a few remove manual work that tends to pile up in November.
| Change | What it does |
|---|---|
| Local delivery at checkout | Offer local delivery as a shipping option, then manage and fulfil those orders in POS |
| Package dimensions per variant | Set dimensions and default packaging per variant instead of per product |
| Native stock counts | Schedule inventory counts by location and time frame in the admin |
| Barcode scanning in the admin | Scan from any admin page to jump to the right product or order |
| Return rules by market | Set return eligibility and return windows per market, with product overrides |
| New carriers | DHL Express in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain; DHL eCommerce in the Netherlands and Poland; UPS international from Canada; Canada Post return labels; Royal Mail pickup points |
Also live: up to 20 barcodes per variant, digital products sold from a URL (templates, bookings, access), auto-generated store policies, passkey sign-in, file folders in the admin, and 13 more admin languages.
If you sell in person, 20 of the updates are for Shopify POS, including customer recognition, pulling up a customer's abandoned online cart in store, and sales tracking per associate. B2B got three small items this time: Algolia search for B2B catalogs, vendor details in catalog exports, and Shop Pay for multi-entity businesses.
9. What is not live yet
Several items people will talk about this season aren't in anyone's admin yet. Shopify gives none of them a date, so treat this list as features you shouldn't plan BFCM around.
| Not live yet | Status on Shopify's page | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor | Rolling out soon | Gift messages and delivery dates at checkout still need an app this BFCM |
| Admin visual refresh | Rolling out soon to all pages | Your internal guides and screenshots will need updating later |
| Filterable activity log | Coming soon | Keep your own change log through BFCM |
| Shopify Protect app | Features rolling out soon | The fraud and dispute features are live; the app isn't |
| Chargeback protection for non-Shop Pay orders | Coming soon | Protection still follows Shop Pay for now |
| HSA and FSA funds in Shop Pay | Coming soon, US only | Worth watching for US health and wellness stores |
| Apple Pay by QR code in other browsers | Coming soon | No action |
| Tiled payment methods, stacked checkout form | Rolling out soon | Your checkout will look different without you changing anything |
| Shop Pay Installments in Australia | Early access | Request access if Australia is a real market for you |
The checkout custom fields are the item most stores will notice. Once they arrive, you will be able to add text inputs, date pickers, check boxes and choice lists to checkout from Shopify's own editor.

10. Five things to do before BFCM
Five tasks come out of Shopify Editions Fall '26 that are worth doing before Black Friday. Two of them deal with things Shopify changed on your store without you doing anything.
- Review your business details in AI channels. Read the policies agents will quote and fix anything wrong.
- Check your apps for script tags. Apps can no longer create or update script tags and must move to theme app extensions or web pixels. An old app nobody maintains may stop working, so find out now, not during BFCM. If you went through the checkout.liquid deprecation, it's the same kind of clean-up.
- Annotate October 28 in analytics. Sessions changed definition on that date.
- Build your BFCM launch as one rollout, covering theme, discounts, catalog and checkout, and test it on a dummy event.
- Schedule the pre-built Black Friday email series if you haven't written your own.

FAQ
When did Shopify Editions Fall '26 launch?
October 28, 2026. Shopify published it as one page at shopify.com/editions/fall2026, grouped into eleven areas.
How do I tell which Fall '26 features I can use today?
Items with no badge on the Editions page are live. "Coming soon", "rolling out soon", "early access" and "in beta" are not. Some live features also depend on your plan or country.
What is the Shop skill?
A file called `shop.md` that you give to ChatGPT, Claude or another agent so it can find products, recommend them and check out with Shop Pay.
Will my apps break now that script tags are deprecated?
Apps can no longer create or update script tags and must use theme app extensions or web pixels. Actively maintained apps should already have migrated. The risk sits with old apps nobody updates, so check what you still have installed before BFCM.
Why did my session count change?
Analytics now filters bots, joins up visits across your site and counts visits with consent in mind. The new number is more accurate, but you can't compare it directly with sessions from before October 28.
Can I add gift messages to checkout natively now?
Not yet. Custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor are rolling out soon. Until then, this still needs an app.
Is Campaign Autopilot worth testing for BFCM?
It now covers Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads next and SEO in the same place. It's worth a test if you have budget but no one to run more channels. Note your current numbers first so you can judge the result.
