What’s new in Checkout Customizer: Checkout MCP and UTM conditions

Checkout Customizer now works with AI agents. With Checkout MCP, you can connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other agents to your checkout setup and manage it by asking in plain language. We also added UTM conditions, so you can tailor checkout messaging to the campaign a shopper came from.

What is Checkout MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI agent connect to an app and use its tools. Checkout MCP is how Checkout Customizer exposes your checkout to an agent. Once connected, the agent can see how your checkout is set up and, with your permission, help you change it.

A store can run upsell offers, custom fields, validations, payment and delivery rules and branding all at once. Instead of clicking through each screen to find one setting, you can ask your agent and get an answer based on your own store's configuration.

What you can ask your agent to do

Here is what your agent can help with:

  • Check your setup: list your checkout extensions and how each one is configured, see what is published, and review your payment and delivery customizations. It can also look up the products, collections, discounts, markets and B2B companies your extensions refer to.
  • Track performance: pull conversion rate, accepted offers, revenue added and upsell clicks for a date range, compare with the previous period, or break results down per offer or per product.
  • Make changes: create, edit, switch on or off, and delete payment and delivery customizations (hide, rename, reorder), validations (custom rules, quantity limits, character limits, regular expressions, address checks) and Custom Fields forms. It can also update your checkout branding.
  • Review what changed: after each change, your agent gives you a link to the settings page in the app so you can check what it set up.

Example prompts flowing through Checkout MCP to extensions, analytics, customizations, validations, custom fields and branding

Some prompts to try:

  • "Which extensions are active on my checkout, and how is each one set up?"
  • "How did checkout convert over the last 30 days compared with the 30 days before?"
  • "Which upsell offers brought in the most revenue this month?"
  • "Add a validation that blocks PO box addresses."

How to connect an agent

The app shows the exact steps for the agent you pick.

  1. Open Checkout Customizer in your Shopify admin and go to Settings > MCP.
  2. Choose your agent: Claude (desktop or web), Claude Code, Codex CLI, ChatGPT, Cursor or another agent.
  3. Follow the instructions shown for that agent. For Claude, Claude Code, Codex CLI and ChatGPT, copy the MCP endpoint or a ready-made command into the agent. For Cursor and other agents, create a personal token in the app: name it, choose its permissions and set an expiry of 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. The app shows the token once, so copy it right away.
  4. When asked, sign in with Shopify and confirm your store, then choose which permissions to give the agent and name the connection.

The MCP tab in Checkout Customizer settings: choose your agent, then add the connector

Your agent then appears under Manage connected agents, where you can see every connection and end any of them with one click.

You stay in control

Staff can't connect an agent on their own. A staff member sends a request first, and the store owner approves or denies it in the Connection requests tab. The owner gets an email when a request comes in. Until it is approved, the staff member can't see the setup instructions, and the app refuses the connection on its side too.

When you connect an agent, you tick which permission groups it gets, such as reading store details, checkout extensions or checkout analytics, or editing specific parts of your checkout. You can end any connection from Manage connected agents. Removing the connector inside your AI tool does not tell us anything, so revoking in the app is the only sure way to disconnect. Connections also expire after 45 days without use, or 90 days after you approved them, whichever comes first. You can reconnect whenever you need to.

Changes have guardrails too. Deleting takes two steps: your agent first shows a summary of what will go, then asks you to confirm. If checkout would ignore a rule, the change is refused before it reaches Shopify and your agent is told which field to fix. Plan rules apply as well. Features that need Shopify Plus or a partner store in the app, such as branding, analytics, translations and display extensions, follow the same rule through your agent.

Also new: UTM conditions

This one is smaller, but it helps if you run paid campaigns. You can now set display conditions on any checkout extension based on the UTM parameters of the session that brought the shopper to checkout. There are five new conditions, each with match and not match: UTM Source, UTM Campaign, UTM Medium, UTM Content and UTM Term.

For example, you could show a different message to shoppers who arrived from a specific email campaign, or keep an offer away from shoppers who came through a particular ad.

The Select condition list grouped into Product, Cart, Customer, Shipping, Payment, Discount, Market and UTM

The Select condition list had also grown long and flat, so we sorted it into groups: Product, Cart, Customer, Shipping, Payment, Discount, Market and UTM, alphabetical within each group. Conditions you have already set up keep working as before.

Get started

Open Checkout Customizer, go to Settings > MCP and connect your first agent. A read-only question about your setup is a good first test. To use UTM conditions, open any checkout extension, add a display condition and pick one from the new UTM group.
